Founded in 1831, UA is the flagship campus of the University of Alabama System. Within Alabama, it is often called the Capstone. UA is the senior doctoral university and as of 2006 the largest university in the state. It is one of the state's three major research universities, along with academic and athletic rivals Auburn University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
